Last Friday, my two boys and I were invited by THE MOMS, Denise Alpert and Melissa Musen Gerstein, to watch an advanced screening of Disney Pixar’s new movie, “Inside Out”. I make rare appearances at any kids movies but I was excited about this one. I was curious how they would portray the characters’ emotions, voiced by actors Amy Poehler (Joy), Bill Hader (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger), Mindy Kaling (Disgust) and Phyllis Smith (Sadness). The TV trailers ask us to imagine little emotion creatures living inside our minds that help to direct our every move. It is all about understanding the part emotions play in our lives and how to keep them balanced.
The movie tells the story of Riley, a young girl, who is moved from her Midwest hockey playing life to San Francisco. We are privy to see how hard it is for Riley to get used to her new surroundings. At headquarters, we see how her emotional advisers guide Riley and her parents thru their day. As mayhem develops, Riley is left with conflicting emotions and no true guide.
Being a huge fan of the whole cast, I loved all the one-liners and funny remarks. My kids and I agree that this movie is for the under 10 crowd. We did laugh and had a good time. I asked the boys about the message, and they said, ”It is ok to be sad and to have all types of emotions, but you have to talk about them”. Emotions have an important role in our everyday life, they help us to adjust to what life throws at us and help us to maintain our well-being.
Bonus for me not only was Mr. Bill Hader at the screening to introduce the movie and answer questions but I snapped a picture (look below) with him too. I was NOT a big dork and didn’t ask him about his tepee of secrets but so wanted to!!
